What is Mastitis?

Mastitis is an infection of the breast caused by bacteria entering the milk ducts.
If milk is not properly drained and remains in the breast, bacteria can grow and cause inflammation.

About 30% of breastfeeding mothers experience mastitis at least once.

Symptoms:

  • Sudden breast pain

  • Fever above 38.5°C

  • Chills, body aches, and flu-like symptoms

  • The affected breast may become red, swollen, and warm to the touch

  • Severe pain or a hard lump may form in the breast

Causes:

  • Incomplete milk drainage due to infrequent or improper breastfeeding

  • Cracked nipples allowing bacteria to enter

  • Stress and fatigue lowering immunity

Prevention & Care:

  • Breastfeed or pump frequently to prevent milk stasis

  • Ensure proper latch and positioning

  • Massage gently to aid milk flow

  • Apply warm compresses before feeding

  • If symptoms worsen, seek medical treatment promptly

Mastitis requires quick treatment to prevent complications and ensure continued healthy breastfeeding.

Exercise and Diet for Breastfeeding Mothers

Exercising while breastfeeding does not affect the baby’s ability to feed.
In fact, exercise helps the mother’s postpartum recovery and mental health.

Studies show that even after vigorous exercise, the composition of breast milk does not significantly change, so it is safe for the baby.
However, extreme fatigue may slightly reduce milk supply, so balance is important.

Recommendations:

  • Control food intake wisely and eat balanced, nutritious meals.

  • Combine a healthy diet with moderate exercise for gradual weight control.

  • Light activities such as walking with the baby can be beneficial.

  • Avoid lying down too much during postpartum recovery; aim for at least 30 minutes of gentle exercise daily to support health and recovery.
