10 Commandments for Successful Breastfeeding for Mother and Baby
-
Receive education about breastfeeding before childbirth.
-
Choose a hospital that supports rooming-in with the baby.
-
Opt for a natural birth if possible.
-
Begin breastfeeding within 30 minutes to 1 hour after birth.
-
Feed the baby whenever they show signs of hunger.
-
Learn to recognize hunger cues and feed before the baby cries.
-
Breastfeed at least 8–12 times a day.
-
During each feeding, nurse on one side for at least 10–15 minutes before switching to the other breast. Wake the baby if they fall asleep. Feed at night as well, at least every 4 hours.
-
Give only breast milk. Do not offer water, formula, or pacifiers unless medically necessary. Avoid bottles and artificial nipples early on.
-
Continue breastfeeding even after 2 years if possible, as longer breastfeeding is beneficial. |
